Why is there always a small bowl of water on the tables at Jacobite feasts?


Because after King James was forced out of the country, the Jacobites devised a series of codes and signals in order to avoid prison or worse.
At a feast or dinner, they would raise their glasses and circle the bowl of water with their drinks. It was a silent toast to 'The King Across the Water'
Many Jacobites still continue this tradition.
