Agnes Randolph (Black Agnes), Countess of Dunbar.

Agnes Randolph married the Earl of Dunbar and was known as Black Agnes because of her beautiful black hair. She, like the previous Countess, mother of the Earl was a strong and indomitable woman.
In1337, an English army under the Earls of Salisbury and Arundel were marching towards Dunbar Castle with a large army.
The Earl of Dunbar was away at this time and Agnes prepared to defend the castle from the English
A bombardment of the castle was begun and siege machines were rolled into place.
Agnes mocked the efforts of the English and ordered one of her maids to flick a handkerchief over each spot on the battlements where damage had occurred, as though dusting off the damage.
The Earl of Salisbury, Sir William Montague, now ordered up a war machine called 'a sow' which was a shed on wheels which covered a battering ram to ram the gates of the castle.
Agnes ordered a huge boulder to be dragged uo to the battlements immediately above this machine and before dropping it she sent a message to Montague saying,
'Beware Montegow
I farrow thy sow'
The boulder was pushed over and smashed into the machine below, shattering it and killing those who were inside.
After three wasted weeks, Montague raised the siege.
When one of the castle defenders, Sir William de Spens, fired an arrow through three coats of chain mail and killed one of his knights, Montague is said to have wisecracked that
'This is one of my lady's pins
Her cupid dart into my heart runs'
As he rode away from Dunbar, he is also reputed to have said,
'Came I early, came I late
I found Agnes at her gate'
