| Hyslop Genealogy My GG Grandmother was a lady by the name of Elizabeth Hyslop. I believe she was born in Cargen bridge, Dumfriesshire in 1839. Elizabeth married my GG Grandfather Thomas Kelly in 1873 and are both buried in St Peters Cemetery, Parkhead, Glasgow. Thomas died in 1908 and Elizabeth in the 1920's.
Elizabeth's parents were Maitland Hyslop b 1801 d 1873 and Jean Smith b1803 d1855.
Maitland Hyslop was born in 1801 in Stoneykirk, Scotland. His parents were Andrew Hyslop and Janat Mc Micken both born C1770's.
The main house in the area was Balgreggan House which I believe belonged to a FredK Maitland Esquire. This property was extensive and may have been a large employer in the region. I suspect that Andrew and Janat Hyslop (Nee Mcmicken) would have been employed by the Maitlands at the end of the 1700's and into the 1800's. This I believe is where the name Maitland originates from. The Hyslops could not obviously use the name as a surname so decided to use it as a forename which has continued on for over 200 years.
