Jamie. 1. The Saltire is the national Flag of Scotland 2. The Red Lion Rampant on the yellow background, is, strictly speaking the Royal Flag of Scotland, but as we have no Scottish Royalty we fly it anyway, and with pride. 3. The Jacobite Standard is a red flag with a white centre and edged with blue then fringed with white. 4, The Na Fir Dileas flag is unique to the Jacobite group NFD and is yellow with the NFD emblem on purple on one side and a Celtic cross on the other. Below the NFD emblem are the words "Fear God, Honour the King"

Yes, the SCOTTISH Royal family. We don't have one of these however, so lots of folk fly it. Scotbrits like to fly it when the Windsors come to town though.

I don't know if that is capable of giving me the same reaction as I get, when thinking about having to sit back and watch an Orange parade.

mairead, Thanks for the explanation. After posting a picture of the Union Jack here sometime back I promised Mike to get some (bigger) Scottish flags. have both the Rampant Lion and a Saltire Flag and fly them at the same height (but lower than our Stars and Stripes). slainte Jamie

I was a little taken aback today watching the opening ceremony when Hong Kong appeared. Isn't Hong Kong part of China I asked myself, indeed it is as the plaque said Hong Kong, China. Please don't get me wrong I want to see an Independent Scotland at the 2012 Olympic Games but surely the participation of Hong Kong sets a precedence. Team GB are representing a Political Union and not a country so why can't Scotland compete under Scotland, GB ? I feel another E Mail coming on !! M... |

Maitland, I am in complete agreement with you re: an independent Scotland before 2012. But, if that is not meant to be, will the Saltire be allowed at those 2012 games? And yes, I realize the question is entirely rhetorical, as none of us can provide an answer. I think some of this comes back to many Scots being deceived. They are not allowed national pride in seeing the flag of their own country being displayed, so no need to worry about any more nationalist sentiments. It is an issue that makes me incredibly sad at the same time it is making me incredibly angry.

I want to see a Scottish Olympic team for 2012 and even if Scotland isn't Independent by 2012 (I am 99% sure we WON'T be) we should still be competing as a Nation. The strange thing is that I have not heard one Scottish Athlete complain that they are competing under the British Flag and that saddens me. Andy Murray who got some bad press for stating that he was not supporting England in the World Cup and who wears Saltires on his tops whilst playing was flying his little Butchers Apron at the opening ceremony with gusto. When it comes to the crunch here in Scotland the people of Scotland will back the Union through a referendum, this is why the moment Nationalists get a majority of seats in the Scottish Parliament or a majority of the 59 Scottish seats at parliament then they have to repeal the act of union in the Scottish parliament and take Scotland forward. Well said Maitland, and if the Scots athletes could not carry a saltire they should have walked empty handed. By the way, I understood that Hong Kong was now oart of China but I swear I saw a Hong Kong group of Athletes enter the stadium as a separate entity. Was I seeing things or is this just Chinese hypocracy?
