This book is a collection of three books by Tranter, The Steps to the Empty Throne, The Path of the Hero King and The Price of the King's Peace.

Of the three books The Path of the Hero King is the fastest paced, most enjoyable book of the group. This book covers the campaigns and battles prior to Bruce's assumption of the throne of Scotland. The books appear to be historically correct, the descriptions of the battles and the dates are reasonably accurate. Tranter must have been a very good student of Scottish history, but the books are historical fiction and many of the events are fictionalized as are the observations of the main characters in the books

The books are a good read, In my opinion anyone who is interested in Scottish history will enjoy all three of the books.

I just purchased a copy of The MacGregor Trilogy by Nigel Tranter, I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of this book. You can tell that I am enjoying reading Nigel Tranter's books.
