Some of the members of this forum discussed the Half-Belted Plaid on another forum. Many of you are familiar with the more commonly seen Fly Plaid worn with formal highland wear, it is worn over the shoulder and fastened to the Argyll or Prince Charlie jacket with a large pewter brooch or pennanular ring.

I decided to invest in one of these plaids and ordered one from Matt Newsome in the 16 oz Ancient Lamont tartan to match my Ancient Lamont kilt you see in my avatar. This very traditional plaid is an adaptation of the plaid shown on the cover of and described in the book The Kilt and how to Wear it by Stuart Ruardi Erskine. This book was written around 1900 and gives a wonderful description of the "rules" of highland wear during that period of time. It can be worn with both highland day and highland formal wear.

When wearing this plaid with a conventional 8 or 9 yard kilt an individual would be clothed in 10 or 11 yards of wonderful highland wool.

I wish I could find a picture to copy of this plaid, I was not able to find one that I could copy for you. The only pictures I have are on the front of the book which I can scan if all else fails.

Perhaps Glen or Jamie can find a photograph of this half belted plaid that could be posted. I am sure both are familiar with it. :saltire:
