On tihs day in 1530, Johnnie Armstrong of Gilknockie, a notorious border reiver, was hanged along with a number of his men, on the orders of King James V.
Before he died, Armstrong is reputed to have turned to King James and said
" I asked for grace, from a graceless face, but there was nane for my men or me"
